School Nights

Wrapped in sweaters
and steeped in the night's ambition
we steady ourselves in each other's laughter
and exhale the smoky breeze.
Filled with a warming sense of purpose
spurred to a deeper place
with smiling mouths turned up towards the stars
and a waving arboretum framing the scene
who are we to be.

Mountain Day

Sitting up beneath the covers
absently listening to morning sounds
noticing the soft grey light spilling over
the window seat
and creeping across the shag carpet.

A promise is made to the mountains
but for now I belay myself further into
this mason jar
and extend my toes deeper into sheets
that have crumpled and crinkled at the foot of the bed.

The clear cold whiff of autumn winds
clean laundry,
toasting poppy seed bagels, and coffee have infiltrated
our room.
I sit up a little straighter, push my roots a bit deeper,
and glance towards the horizon.

Change

I can feel your warmth
surround
When my muscles shake
shiver, beat, and pound
the air between my
body and covers
are empty, floaty-
with the absence of
a lover.

I observe the blue
who loves to mingle
with whispering clouds-
relishing the
tingle      of warming
rays passing inside
It's lonely watching
this passage of time.

Can you feel my thoughts drift towards your heat
as autumn chills and lifts the leaves.
